Bulldogs Thump Cougars

PROVO -- Pitcher Jesse Craig and BYU couldn't overcome four costly errors at Larry H. Miller Field on Thursday night, as it lost 11-5 to Gonzaga.

Craig, 2-2, struck out the first batter he faced, and then got the other two batters to ground out to retire the side to start the game. In the bottom of the first, BYU (8-6) was able to provide Craig with immediate run support helping the Cougars jump out to a 3-0 lead on the Bulldogs (10-8).

Leon Johnson was able to get things going on a beautifully orchestrated double steal with Collin Fanning stealing second while Johnson stole home. Apana Nakayama and Kent Walton hit in the other two runs.

The Bulldogs responded by roughing up Craig in the top of the second for five hits and three runs respectively to tie the score at 3-3.

In the bottom of the second BYU was able to get another run in off a Johnson single that brought J.T. Musso into score to put the Cougars back on top 4-3.

In the bottom of the fourth Craig gave up a lead-off single to Gonzaga, but was able to get out of the inning with no further damage in large part to a heads-up double play by first baseman Kasey Ko and shortstop Dan Vargas.

The floodgates opened for the Bulldogs in the top of the fifth as they had four hits and left-fielder Mark Castellitto hit a one-out single to right field with the bases loaded, resulting in a three-base error to put Gonzaga on top 9-4. Craig was replaced by Jacob Perez in the fifth and the first two batters Perez faced he was able to force them to pop-out and end the inning.

"It's tough when you give them extra outs, instead of the standard three," said head coach Vance Law. "We didn't do a good job of battling, we've got to work hard to get better."

BYU will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak against Gonzaga on Friday at 5:00 p.m. at Miller Park.
