Wildcats Sweep Series

MANHATTAN -- After taking the initial lead, BYU gave up six straight runs Tuesday in a 6-3 loss at Kansas State.

Cougar centerfielder Stephen Wells led off the game with a triple and scored when Collin Fanning stole second base in the first inning.

Again the Cougars had a man on third when Fanning walked, stole second and advanced on a groundout in the third, but he was stranded.

Wildcat Brett Scott singled in the fourth and advanced on Nate Tenbrink's double down the line, then scored on a sac-fly to tie the score at one-all.

KSU took the lead in the fifth inning with a lead-off single by Tyler Link. Link advanced to second on Jake Wortham's wild pitch and scored on Byron Wiley's single to make the score, 2-1. Eli Rumler hit a one-out double down the rightfield line to bring in the third Wildcat run, as Wortham left the game in favor of Brad Kidd. Kidd surrendered a sac-fly which brought in an unearned run before the inning closed at 4-1.

In the sixth the Cougars loaded the bases with one out only to see it go for naught in a 1-2-3 double play which closed the frame. They did, however, pick up their third hit in the game during the sixth off a lead-off bunt which Fanning beat out.

A BYU momentum swing came after J.D. Stambaugh relieved Kidd in the bottom of the two-run sixth, with KSU leading 6-1.

The Cougars answered in the top of the seventh with two runs coming when pinch-hitter Leon Johnson scored on Wells' one-out single, and Danny Vargas scored on an error, to close the gap to 6-3. But Apana Nakayama grounded into BYU's third double play of the afternoon off new KSU pitcher Tyler Ruch.

"We didn't play up to our potential, and we didn't execute well these two games," said BYU Coach Vance Law of the KSU series. "Today we didn't get a timely hit when needed and we didn't do a good job defending in the sixth."

The Cougars will remain in Manhattan on Wednesday to practice at the all-turf infield in Tointon Stadium because of difficulties in flight schedules.

BYU, now 8-5, is next in action on Thursday at 5 p.m., at Miller Park in Provo where it has a four-game win-streak as it starts a three-game series with Gonzaga (9-8).
