Wortham Named MWC Pitcher of Week
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--BYU sophomore left-handed pitcher and New Mexico Senior Daniel Stovall have been named Mountain West Conference Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively. This is the fourth career weekly award for Stovall and the first for Wortham.
Wortham, an Allen, Texas, native, tallied his first win of the season as BYU outlasted Missouri, 4-1, in 10 innings at the Service Academies Classic in Millington, Tenn., last week. In his 9.0 innings on the mound, he gave up just two hits, and one unearned run, while striking out seven and walking none. Wortham retired 19 straight batters, including striking out the side in the ninth to force extra innings. He was named to the all-tournament team for his performance.
Stovall, from Midland, Texas, batted .526 (10-for-19) from the plate, with a home run, three doubles, eight runs scored and eight RBI, as New Mexico went 3-1 last week. In the first game of a three-game series vs. Texas State, Stovall went 3-for-5 with a home run, four RBI and two runs scored. He blasted his league-leading third homer of the season, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the third, putting UNM up 5-0 on the way to a 10-0 victory. In a 13-7 game two win, Stovall went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored. His four-hit game was the first for the Lobos this season.
