TCU Ends Six-Game Streak

LAS -- Top-seeded TCU ended BYU's six-game winning streak Thursday evening with a 13-6 defeat, dropping the Cougars to the survivor bracket.

The loss drops the Cougars to a 32-27 record as they prepare for a Friday game at 7 p.m., against the winner of New Mexico and UNLV, who are playing late Thursday. TCU improved to a 37-21 mark and awaits the winner of Friday's game for a championship on Saturday afternoon.

"We never really found the answer to (Brad) Furnish," said BYU Coach Vance Law of TCU's pitcher who scattered eight hits in as many innings.

Seth Johnson drew a lead-off walk, followed by a high-hop single from Marcos Villezcas to get BYU off to a good start against Furnish in the first inning. They both scored off a gap single by Kasey Ko. Villezcas score from first and slide home was controversial as it was last month in Provo when the Horned Frogs took two of three. He again was ruled safe as BYU took a 2-0 lead.

It was the first time in the last 12 games BYU has taken the initial lead.

TCU scored its first run when Villezcas had a grounder scoot between his legs with two outs in the bottom of the first.

For the next two frames BYU stranded runners on base, aided by a second inning TCU double play. The fourth-inning ended the Cougars' hope when Blake Crosby slide wrong into second, causing an automatic double play.

TCU tied the game in the third when Matt Carpenter then lined a two-out double down the right field line.

The Horned Frogs took a 3-2 lead with no outs in the fourth when Ryan pack singled up the middle after two fake bunts, scoring Andrew Walker. That opened the floodgates for three more runs as Jesse Craig struggled with his control, behind 6-2.

Ko got a lead-off single in the sixth and scored two outs later on a Stetson Banks double down the left field line to bring the Cougars within three.

Back-to-back doubles by TCU in the sixth reclaimed its four-run margin. On the next batter, a two-run homer by No. 17, Chad Huffman, his 17th of the season, put TCU up, 9-3. Two batters and a double later, Craig was replaced by Anthony Bingham who ended the inning.

"They hit a couple balls hard, give them credit," said Law of TCU. "For the most part, Jesse (Craig) pitched well."

Friday's game will be broadcast live locally by KOVO Radio (960 AM) at 7 p.m. PDT.
