Cougars Can't Catch Huskies

SEATTLE -- A seventh-inning solo homer by Jeff Hiestand wasn't enough for BYU as Washington's pitching stymied the Cougars with 20 strikeouts in a 10-1 loss Thursday.

The Cougars didn't get run on the board against the Huskies until Hiestand's homer agaist Washington reliever Nick Haughian. The hot-hitting Cougar collected his second home home run in as many games and his fifth of the season. With the loss BYU falls to 14-19 while Washington improves to 23-13.

Cougar starter Mitch Woolf struggled to find his control through three and two-thirds innings pitched, allowing five runs on three hits while walking seven and striking out two. Woolf started in place of Patrick Wells, who didn't make the trip. Reliever James Platt didn't fare much better than Woolf, allowing four runs on five hits through one and one-third innings pitched.

Marcos Villezcas broke up a no-hit bid by Husky starter Tim Lincecum in the fourth inning on a screaming one-out double down the left field line. He was then stranded at second as Lincecum collected his eighth and ninth strikeouts to end the inning.

Washington starter and national strikeout leader Lincecum struck out the side in both the first and second innings, baffling the Cougar lineup with a nasty curveball and a fastball clocked earlier season at nearly 100 mph.

Through three frames he remained perfect, having struck out seven of the first nine he faced. On the night he collected 14 strikeouts in six innings pitched while walking just one giving up just one hit. The Cougars weren't able to put a run up against the hurler as he increased his shutout streak to 34.2 innings.

The 20 strikeouts are the most by the Cougars since the 2000 season in a loss to UNLV in Provo.

In the fourth inning Washington collected six runs on four hits to push the game out of reach to 7-0.

Kasey Ko drew the Cougars' first walk against Lincecum in the top of the fifth, becoming just the second base runner for BYU. The big freshman found himself standing on second with two outs after a sacrifice grounder by Cougar third baseman Chris Johnson, but wasn't able to score.

Washington scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 9-0 in favor of the Huskies.

Jake Wortham came in to pitch for the Cougars in the top of the sixth, and after allowing a lead-off double to left, he struck out a Husky base runner for the first out. Adrian Molina then showed some stellar defense in center when he charged in to catch a shallow fly and doubled up the runner at second to end the scoring threat.

A home run off Wortham by Danny Cox in the seventh was the last the Huskies would score. The round-tripper was the only one allowed by the Cougars to the No. 3 home run-hitting team in the nation.

The teams face off for two more games this week in Seattle: Friday night at 6:30 p.m. PDT and Saturday afternoon at noon PDT.
