Hiestand-Power Downs Rebels
LAS -- A seven-run fifth inning and another exceptional night at the plate by Jeff Hiestand powered the Cougars in their second straight win against UNLV Friday, 14-8.
Picking up his second win of the season was right-handed starter Jesse Craig (2-5, 3.65) who went five and a third innings, allowing six earned runs on ten hits while striking out four and walking none. The Cougars improve to 13-17 with the victory while UNLV falls to 15-18.
Nine different Cougar hitters had at least one RBI in the game and nine different hitters also got at least one hit as BYU's bats continued to be hot against UNLV's pitching.
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead on the night and wasted no time in getting to UNLV starter Matt Luca. BYU got five straight base hits against the Luca to go up 4-0 in the top of the first inning. Kasey Ko knocked in two of those runs himself on a scorching triple down the right field line. He finished the night 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Craig retired the Rebels in order in the bottom of the first, collecting his first strikeout of the game. He was helped by a BYU six-four-three double play in both the second and third innings as he retired all nine Rebels he faced through three innings.
Hiestand doubled for the second time in the top of the third with two outs but the Cougars couldn't manage any runs that inning and the score remained 4-0. His hot hitting against UNLV continued as he finished the night 3-for-4 with three doubles, three RBI and two runs scored.
The Rebels climbed back into the game in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs on five base hits. Marcos Villezcas started the Cougars' third double play of the game to end the inning and keep BYU up, 4-3 going into the fifth.
Stetson Banks moved around the bases in the fifth in just about every way possible as he reached on an error, moved to second on a balk, stole third and then scored on an RBI double by lead-off hitter Seth Johnson.
Johnson was then able to move to third on a wild pitch by Chris Saddoris before scoring the second run of the inning when he tagged up at third on a line drive out to center by Villezcas.
BYU then added five more runs as it got four hits up the middle of the infield. The seven runs in the inning put the Cougars up 11-3 after five and a half.
UNLV struck back in the bottom of the inning as American Fork native and Rebel catcher Braden Walker hit a homer to left to pull his team closer to BYU and make the score 11-4 in favor of the men in blue.
The Rebels added two more runs in the bottom of the next sixth on a single and a home run by Chris Bonnell to make the score 11-6. The home run caused a pitching change for BYU as Mitch Woolf came into the game in relief and retired the two batters he faced in the inning to hold the lead for BYU.
BYU increased their lead in the top of the eighth when they scored three more runs on another Hiestand double, and a Ben Saylor single. The lead through seven and a half was 14-6 before the Rebels made it 14-8 on a two-run homer by Keith Smith.
UNLV Assistant Coach Scott Malone was tossed out of the game by third base umpire Kelly Gonzales as the game was stopped for a few minutes in the inning. BYU reliever Josh Barrett settled in after the ejection and retired both batters he faced while striking out one.
Barrett dominated the Rebels in the bottom of the ninth when he struck out two to finish things up for BYU.
The two teams meet for the third game of this week's series Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. PDT.
