Saylor Homers Twice in Loss

PROVO -- Southern Utah brought a hitting barrage to Larry Miller Field, connecting on 21 hits en route to a 17-8 victory over BYU Wednesday afternoon.

Ben Saylor hit two home runs for the Cougars, who drop to 7-13 with the loss. The Thunderbirds improve to 10-6 with victory. The 17 runs were the most given up by BYU pitching at Miller Park since 2004.

SUU got off to an early start scoring four runs in the top of the first. The Thunderbirds got a big, two-run home run from Cameron Nelson.

The Cougars came back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning. Kent Walton laced an opposite-field RBI double and later scored on a Jeff Hiestand sacrifice fly. Ben Saylor blasted his second home run of the season, a solo shot to center field to cut the SUU lead to 4-3.

The balls kept flying out of the park for Southern Utah as it homered twice in the third frame to extend its lead to 7-4. BYU answered with a run of its own when Hiestand came up with a two-out single and showed hustle when he scored from third on a wild pitch.

SUU exploded in the top of the fourth inning. The Thunderbirds sent 11 batters to the plate, benefiting from seven hits and three errors by BYU to put seven runs on the board.

The fifth inning was the first frame that the Cougars managed to keep Southern Utah scoreless. Saylor nailed his second homer of the game in the bottom of the same inning to cut the lead to 13-6.

SUU added four more runs in the seventh and eighth innings, including its fourth home run of the game.

BYU continues its current home stand when it welcomes Northern Colorado for three games beginning Thursday at 7 p.m.
