GREELEY -- Northern Colorado used a six-run fifth inning to propel it to a 12-7 victory over BYU Tuesday afternoon.

BYU falls to 28-12-1 (14-4, Mountain West Conference) on the year while the Bears improved to 16-26.

Northern Colorado jumped out to an early lead, scoring one run apiece in the first and second innings. In the first, the Bears scored without recording a hit. In the second frame, Jarrod Chacon hit a solo home run for UNC.

BYU responded in the top of the third inning, scoring three to take the lead 3-2. Andrew Law delivered the big blow for the Cougars on a two-run triple. He later scored on a Marcos Villezcas groundout. Northern Colorado regained the lead in the bottom half of the third scoring two.

BYU then scored four unanswered runs, two in each the fourth and fifth frames. Law knocked in his third run of the day in the fourth on a RBI single. The two runs in the fifth inning came on a Ben Saylor sacrifice fly and Kory Knell's RBI single.

The Bears came back with big innings of their own. They strung together eight unanswered runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth UNC batted around, sending 10 batters to the plate while netting six runs. After holding the Cougars scoreless in the top of the sixth, Northern Colorado plated two more runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 12-7 lead.

The Bears' pitcher Roy Allen came in and silenced BYU's bats. Despite coming into the game with an 8.71 ERA, Allen pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up no runs and only four hits to earn his second victory of the season.

The same two teams play tomorrow in Greeley at 2 p.m. (MDT) before the Cougars return to conference play with a weekend series at Air Force beginning Thursday.
