Woolf Twirls a 2-1 Gem

PROVO -- Junior college transfer Mitch Woolf pitched a complete game, leading BYU to a 2-1 victory over Colorado State-Pueblo Monday at Larry H. Miller Field.

It was a windy, cold day at the ball park. Game time temperature was 43 degrees with a brisk wind blowing in. With the win, the Cougars improve to 10-4-1, while the Thunderwolves drop to 11-14.

Woolf's counterpart, CSU-P pitcher Jeff Williams had an impressive outing, giving up only four hits to the good-hitting Cougars' squad.

The Thunderwolves jumped out to an early lead with a first-inning, RBI single from first baseman Austin LeSage. After that, only one other CSU-P base runner reached second base, in the second inning.

Although BYU's hitters were held in check the whole night, the Cougars were able to manufacture runs in the third and fourth innings to get the victory.

In the third, Sean McNaughton laced a single up the middle with one out in the inning. He then stole second base and took third on a wild throw by Thunderwolves' catcher Danny Cummins. Marcos Villezcas did his job, hitting a RBI sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game.

BYU took the lead in the fourth when Jeff Hiestand led off the inning with a double, the only extra-base hit of the game. Brandon Taylor moved Hiestand to third on a groundout and Ben Saylor followed with an RBI ground out to give the Cougars the lead.

After that, it was Woolf's game. He struck out nine batters, while only walking two and giving up five singles. Woolf dropped his ERA from 16.20 to 3.38. He threw only 111 pitches all game and is the first Cougar hurler to pitch a nine-inning complete game. Woolf credits his team and the cool, windy conditions as helpers in the win.

"My team really helped me out," Woolf said. "They made the plays in the field and got me two [runs]."

BYU head coach Vance Law isn't surprised how Woolf pitched.

"In his first outing, he was a little nervous," Law said. "This is what we see in practice everytime he throws. He has a nasty, nasty curveball, one of the best you will see in the college game."

Fans that showed up late for Monday's game may have missed most of the one-hour, thirty-nine minute affair. The two-game series concludes Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Larry H. Miller Field.
