Doubles Lead to Aggie Defeat
LAS CRUCES -- Doubles ruled Friday as BYU won its second game in as many days at New Mexico State, 11-7.
In a come-from-behind victory, Ben Saylor's double down the left field line scored Apana Nakayama to give BYU its first lead of the game at 8-7 in a five-run ninth inning. The Cougars improve to 8-4-1, while the Aggies are now even at 10-10.
Saylor's double was the final two-bagger of the day as BYU secured its fifth straight victory of the season. Cougar freshman Sean McNaughton was one shy of the school and league record with three doubles for the afternoon. BYU had seven doubles for the afternoon.
BYU sophomore Josh Barrett picked up his first victory of the season. Barrett got Brandon Lance to fly out with the bases loaded to Adrian Molina in centerfield on full count to end the eight inning.
NMS took advantage of a Cougar miscue in the third to scoring an unearned run. Luke Hopkins then smacked a three-run, two-out homer to give the Aggies a 4-0 lead.
McNaughton led off the fourth with a double to left field to set up BYU's first run. He advanced to third on a ground-out by Marcos Villezcas and scored on Jeff Hiestand's sacrifice fly to right field.
BYU picked up singles by Casey Cloward and McNaughton in the fifth, but they were stranded on the corners.
The Cougars churned out a pair of unearned runs in the sixth to pull within one, aided by Saylor's single and a pair of errors which eventually advanced Hiestand to third.
With the gap closed, 4-3, NMS widened its lead in the sixth from a leadoff homer by Emory Davies to left center.
McNaughton and Villezcas hit back-to-back doubles in the seventh to again bring the Cougars back within one, 5-4.
In his first full inning of relief, Justin Su'a struggled on the mound, loading the bases through a single, a hit batter and a walk. Davies then hit his second double of the day to drive in a pair of runs. It would have been a three-run double, but Su'a took a relay from Saylor in right field and combined with Cloward to gun down Hopkins at the plate.
Behind, 7-4, BYU bounced back in the eighth when Brandon Taylor got on from an error and advance to second. Taylor moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored off Molina's double down the left field line.
McNaughton tagged his third double of the day in the eighth, again down the left field line, to drive in Molina. This time the Aggies got their own play at the plate when Cloward was pegged at home on a questionable call after a relay throw from left field to third base in an attempt to tie the game, but instead ended the inning with BYU trailing, 7-6.
With two out and the bases loaded in the eighth, the Cougars again substituted on the mound, bringing in Barrett for lefty Lance Beus.
In the ninth BYU loaded the bases with no outs and tied the score, 7-7, when Taylor hit a sac-fly to bring in Villezcas.
Molina was then walked to load the bases with one out before closer Alec Shepherd took the mound. Kory Knell flew out to center, but drove in Hiestand to put BYU up, 9-7. Cloward hit a sun single to right, giving BYU a 11-7 advantage as both Molina and Saylor scored.
Starting BYU pitcher Brandon Christiansen, who recorded six strikeouts on the day, got the Cougars out of a jam in the second after two Aggies consecutively singled by striking out the final two batters of the inning. He again struck out two in the fifth inning.
The two teams meet for a final time at 1 p.m., on Saturday.
