Final Regular Season Road Trip
After playing its first 26 games in California, BYU makes it final trip of the season to the west coast state as it takes on San Diego State in a three-game series beginning Wednesday.
The two teams will play at 6 p.m. (PST) on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. It will mark the first time this season the Cougars haven't played on Saturday during a series. The trip is the fifth this year to California.
BYU enters the series 21-26 and 11-10 in the Mountain West Conference, four games behind conference leading UNLV after winning two of three from New Mexico last week. It is the first time the Cougars have had a winning percentage over .500 in conference action. The Aztecs are a game behind the Rebels and a half game ahead of New Mexico for second place with a 27-26 and 14-7 record.
Patrick Wells (5-4, 5.91) is scheduled to start on Wednesday and Nick Lemon (2-3, 5.10) on Thursday with Friday's starter yet to be determined. Lemon earned his first victory as a starter last week against New Mexico.
The Cougars are 32-57-1 all-time against the Aztecs. In April, BYU won two of three against San Diego State in Provo. Last year the Cougars went 2-5 against the Aztecs who eliminated BYU from the MWC Tournament.
Shortstop Brandon Taylor leads the Cougars into the series after being named MWC Player of the Week. The sophomore slugger went 9-for-15 with three home runs and 10 RBI against New Mexico last week in Provo. Taylor helped the Cougars take two of three against the third place Aztecs. He leads the conference with 11 home runs and is one of only six players hitting above .400 in conference games.
All three games will be broadcast live by KOVO 960 AM with veteran broadcaster Brent Norton calling the play-by-play. Friday's broadcast is also available on the BYU Radio channel on DirecTV and the Dish Network as well as over the Internet. Live stats are available for all three games. Live audio is available for Wednesday and Thursday's games through a RealOne College Sports Pass fee based subscription.
