Utah Comes to Larry H. Miller Field Again
A six-game home stand begins Thursday for BYU as the University of Utah comes to Provo for a three-game series at Larry H. Miller Field.
The Cougars host the Utes at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 6 p.m., on Saturday. Saturday's game will be a live telecast on BYUTV.
The Cougars, 16-25 and 6-9 in the Mountain West Conference, return home after snow postponed the three-game series with Air Force. The Utes won two of three games against San Diego State last week improving their record to 12-23 and 5-10.
Probable pitching starters for BYU are Patrick Wells (5-3, 5.47) on Thursday, Nick Lemon (1-3, 3.68) on Friday and TBA on Saturday.
BYU has a 191-84-1 all-time record over Utah including a current 10-game winning streak. The last time the two teams met happened on March 27 in a double header at Franklin Covey Field in Salt Lake City. The double header lasted 27 innings and eight hours with the Cougars winning both games in extra innings including a BYU record 17-inning marathon victory.
BYU's greatest and longest standing rivalry did not start on the football field. In 1895, the Brigham Young Academy played the first ever intercollegiate event in Utah against the Utes on a baseball diamond. The game ended in a 0-0 tie and a bench-clearing brawl.
BYUTV will telecast live coverage of the Utah-BYU game at 6 p.m., on Saturday May 1 with a delayed airing on KBYU at 10 p.m. BYUTV is available nationally on DirecTV Plus (channel 374) and the Dish Network (channel 9403). The telecast can also be watched live over the Internet. Veteran play-by-play announcer Jay Monsen and analyst Gary Sheide, a former BYU quarterback, will call the telecast. A link to the telecast can be found on BYU baseball's schedule page at www.byucougars.com. Clicking on the "Live Audio" link for the scheduled date will link you to the telecast.
KOVO 960 AM will broadcast all three games live with Brent Norton calling the play-by-play. Saturday's game will also be available as a live audiocast on the Internet and will be broadcasted live on the BYU Radio channel through DirecTV and the Dish Network. Gametracker is available for all three games. Links to the webcasts can be found on BYU baseball's schedule page at www.byucougars.com with Saturday's audiocast available at www.byuradio.org.
The May 18 game against Utah Valley State College has been cancelled due to schedule conflicts. The AFA series is now a six-game series in Provo on May 20-22.
