27 Innings + Eight Hours=Two Victories over Utah

Salt Lake City (March 27, 2004)--Outfield catches by Ben Saylor and Ranger Wiens sealed BYU's sweep Saturday over Utah in 17 and 10 innings, respectively.

Saylor's diving catch in the 17th inning was the game-ending out in the Cougars' 5-4 victory of the four-hour, 16-minute battle. Wiens' diving catch in the 10th inning of the nightcap led to BYU's 11-10 defeat of the Utes at Franklin Covey Field.

The Cougars improve to 13-19 overall and 3-3 in the Mountain West Conference, while Utah falls to 5-16 and 1-5.

For the record, the 17-inning game was the longest in school and league history, surpassing the 15-inning victory by BYU over Utah in 1985, 12-9.

"You don't want to know what I was going through my mind," said Saylor of his game-ending catch in game one, the middle of a three-game series with the Utes. "I tripped and stumbled, but I did see the ball go in my glove."

That right-field catch came off a ball batted by Matt Ciaramella with the bases loaded.

Rob Itri's two-out single to right drove in Wiens for the winning run. Wiens got aboard when Jared Pena booted the ball at second base and the Cougar co-captain continued advancing on his own to second to put himself in scoring position.

Itri, who leads the team with a current six-game hitting streak, led the Cougars with two RBI in the 17-inning game and three RBI in the 10-inning contest.

The Cougars had a 4-2 lead based on starter Paul Jacinto's eight-inning performance of Saturday's opener. The Utes' Eric Chevalier sent the game into extra innings with a two-run homer in the ninth. Chevalier hit for the cycle with a single in the second, a triple in the fifth and a double in the 11th.

Reliever Nick Lemon picked up his first victory of the season, throwing five-plus innings and 65 pitches after taking the mound in the 12th inning. Bryce Burger replaced Lemon in the 17th to earn his second save. Four double plays aided BYU's pitchers in the second, fourth, seventh and 16th innings.

The 5-4 game was postponed due to rain on Friday, then delayed another hour in its start because of a muddy field. Play was stopped for over a half an hour in the middle of the eighth because of rain.

"This was a whale of a day," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "I take my hat off to Utah because they continued to battle."

Law's charges built a 10-2 lead in the nightcap through six-plus innings pitching from Justin Su`a. Then Utah's Ryan Khoury belted a one-out grand slam in the six-run seventh inning.

The Utes tied the score in the ninth at 10-all when Jake Waldram doubled in Jay Brossman in the three-hour, forty-six minute nightcap.

Leftfielder Kory Knell doubled in Casey Cloward for the winning run, but Knell suffered a hamstring pull after rounding first. Law inserted Wiens as a pinch-runner for Knell and opted to use his experience catching flies as he used the pre-season All-American in the outfield for the first time at BYU.

The gamble paid off when Wiens, who had summer shoulder surgery, dove past the left field line to put out Chevalier for the first out of the 10th.

Freshman lefty J.D. Stambaugh improved his record to 2-0 on the mound.

"I'm as mentally drained as I have been," said Law of the marathon day. "We'll be at the ballpark 14 hours any time if we can come away with two wins."

This marked the 10th consecutive victory over Utah in a rivalry that began in 1895 with a bench-clearing brawl of a game than ended in a 0-0 tie, the first intercollegiate athletic contest in the state of Utah.

The Cougars continue to play on the road this coming week when a three-game series starts at New Mexico.
