Chambers Paces 5-3 Defeat of Fresno State

FRESNO -- Strong pitching and timely hitting helped BYU win its fourth straight game, beating tournament host Fresno State 5-3 on Wednesday.

The fourth straight win is the longest of the season for the Cougars (8-15) as they snap the Bulldogs (9-13) three-game winning streak. BYU is now the only unbeaten team in the six-team Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic.

Patrick Wells (3-1) earned his third win of the season, allowing three runs on four hits in seven and one-third innings. Well struck out six on the night before a season-high crowd of 2,689 fans.

Ryan Chambers tripled, scored and had one RBI, finishing 2-for-4. Casey Cloward, Tim Law and Ben Saylor also went 2-for-4 in the game. Law and Wade Vest increased their hitting streaks to six games.

Following a leadoff walk to Rob Itri in the second inning, Saylor singled to move Itri to second. An RBI single by Law gave the Cougars an early 1-0 lead.

Fresno State tied the game in the bottom of the second with back-to-back doubles. BYU took its lead back in the third inning after a triple by Chambers and a sacrifice fly from Kory Knell gave the Cougars a 2-1 advantage.

Cloward scored BYU's third run in the fifth inning after singling and crossing home plate on a sacrifice fly from Chambers. With two outs, back-to-back doubles by Knell and Ranger Wiens increased the Cougars' lead to 4-1.

The Bulldogs brought the Cougars' lead to one with a two-run home run by Kyle Wilson in the sixth inning. Wilson finished the game with 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Vest gave BYU an insurance run in the ninth inning, singling in Law from third base. After pitching a scoreless eighth, Bryce Burger (0-1) shutdown the Bulldogs in the ninth, striking out the side in order for his first save.

The Cougars play Monmouth (2-7) Thursday at 1:30 p.m. (PST). Monmouth is 1-2 in the tournament, winning its first tournament game Wednesday in a 12-7 victory over Chicago State. In other Thursday tournament games, Chicago State will play Portland at 10 a.m. (PST) and Fresno State will play Dallas Baptist at 6:30 p.m. (PST).
