Cougars Hold Off Dallas Baptist, 6-4

FRESNO -- After losing a three-run lead in the eighth, BYU scored three runs to defeat Dallas Baptist 6-4 on Monday.

Paul Jacinto (0-5) pitched seven-plus strong innings for BYU (6-15) in the opening game at the Pepsi-Johnny Quick Classic hosted by Fresno State. Jacinto held the Patriots (12-6) scoreless through the first seven innings, striking out seven and scattering five hits. Lance Beus (1-1) earned his first win in relief and Nick Lemon (0-1) captured his second save, pitching a scoreless ninth.

Beginning with a pitchers duel through the first five innings, the Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Wade Vest led off the inning with a single, extending his hitting streak to four games. After Ryan Chambers reached on an error and Rob Itri walked to load the bases, Ranger Wiens hit a sacrifice fly to score Vest. Chambers would also score on the Patriots' second error in the inning. Itri scored the third run on a RBI single by Brandon Taylor.

The Cougars kept the 3-0 lead into the eight inning. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with nobody out for Dallas Baptist. Ryan Olivo then cleared the bases with a grand slam, giving the Patriots a 4-3 lead. The home run is Olivo's third of the year.

A two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth helped BYU score three runs and pull ahead for the final 6-4 score. Taylor doubled in Itri for his second RBI in the game. Ben Saylor and Tim Law also hit RBI singles in the inning.

BYU will play Chicago State at 1:30 p.m. (PST) on Tuesday for the first time in school history. Dallas Baptist will face Monmouth at 10 a.m. (PST) and Portland will face Fresno State at 6:35 p.m. (PST) in other Tuesday games in the tournament.
