Cougars Trample Cal Northridge

NORTHRIDGE -- With its largest margin of victory this season, BYU (5-15) defeated Cal State Northridge by six runs on Saturday, 10-4.

Catcher Casey Cloward, who finished 2-for-4, provided much of the early fireworks with a three-run home run in the fourth inning, giving the Cougars a 5-0 lead. The home run is Cloward's first since his freshman year in 2000.

The Cougars had 15 hits in the game led by Brad Hales who finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Five BYU players had multiple hits in the game.

Justin Su'a (2-1) earned his second victory, pitching seven strong innings. Su'a allowed two runs off six hits and struck out six.

Ryan Chambers drove in the Cougars' first run in the third inning with a single after a double by Wade Vest. BYU then scored four more runs in the fourth led by Cloward's home run and a triple by Rob Itr.

Cal Northridge (7-12) made the score 5-2 with two back-to-back solo shots in the sixth inning by Michael Paul and John Voita. Voita led the Matadors with a 4-for-4 performance with one RBI.

BYU lengthened its lead with a run in the seventh and four runs in the ninth spoiling a Cal Northridge comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth. The Matadors scored two runs in their last at-bat, but failed to further the damage, leaving the bases loaded.

The Cougars now head to Fresno for a six-team, six-day tournament hosted by the Fresno State. BYU will play Fresno State and Portland in the tournament as well as first time match-ups with Dallas Baptist, Chicago State and Monmouth. The Cougars begin the tournament against Dallas Baptist on Monday at 10 a.m. (PST).
