Barnes, Carson Help Whip SUU
PROVO -- A pair of Claytons, Barnes and Carson, helped lead BYU's baseball team to an 18-1 victory Monday in non-conference action at Larry H. Miller Field.
Clayton Barnes, a freshman southpaw from Provo, picked up his first collegiate victory, throwing 64 pitches and striking out five in four hitless innings as BYU used a trio of pitchers. Clayton Carson, a redshirt freshman from California, tallied six runs batted in, including a two-run homer to straight-away center on the first pitch in the third inning.
"It was a fastball that couldn't have been in a better spot if I had teed it up," said Carson of his fourth dinger of the season. "We knew Coach's focus was getting a lot of guys in the lineup."
Eighteen Cougars played in the game as Coach Vance Law took the opportunity also to rest starting shortstop Ranger Wiens whose spot was filled by Carson. Carson went 4-of-6 on the afternoon and was a double shy of the cycle. He belted a triple in the eighth off the wall, but didn't think he would get up again, except the Cougars batted around and he made the final out of the inning.
"We jumped out fast," said Law. "We wanted a good start so we could get as many position players in the game as we would. I didn't want to pour it on, but we played hard as our reserves needed this opportunity."
The Cougars gave Barnes a 10-0 lead by the time he left the game, starting with a pair of RBI from sacrifice flies in the first inning by Jake Stubblefield and Brock Jacobsen. Carson drove in the third run of the first inning to give BYU a 3-0 lead.
Wade Vest provided some heroics in the second inning, driving in Casey Cloward, who had doubled. Vest alertly scooted to a double on that play, then stole third and scored on the overthrow by the SUU catcher for a 5-0 advantage.
Following Carson's third-inning homer, Vest drove in Tim Law on a sac-fly to put BYU up 8-0.
Carson drove in both runs of the fourth inning with a sharp single to left field, putting the Cougars at 10-0.
Reserve centerfielder Beau Seil drove in the only run of the sixth inning. Mike Weingarten scored the only run of the seventh when he was driven in by Ryan Chambers. Chambers extended his hitting streak to 14 games, tying the team's best of the season.
In the six-run eighth, Seil drove in Blair Lucas who had led off with a double to start the scoring. Carson drove in Seil and Tim Law drove in Carson. Tim Law scored when Weingarten knocked BYU's seventh double and his second of the day.
The T-Birds got on the scoreboard in the ninth when Jake Reynolds scored off Kelcey Kemp's double to avoid the shutout.
The victory came from the most runs BYU has scored since Miller Park opened and was the worst defeat since 1998 at home when the Cougars downed SUU, 22-1.
It was the most runs scored by BYU since beating the Air Force Academy 20-7 at the Utah Valley State field in 2001 just before Miller Park opened. AFA is BYU's next opponent as a three-game series starts on Thursday at 7 p.m., at Miller Park.
