ASU Completes Sweep

TEMPE -- For the second day in a row, BYU went out to an early lead against No. 8 Arizona State, but again came up short, losing 6-4 Saturday afternoon.

ASU, now 14-1, broke a 4-4 tie by scoring two runs in the eighth inning. The loss drops to Cougars to 1-5 on the season.

Senior left fielder Doug Jackson, led the game off with a triple to right field, and scored one out later on a single to right field by junior centerfielder Brock Jacobsen.

BYU scored another three runs in the third, increasing its lead to 4-0. With one out, Jackson, who led the Cougars with three hits, singled through the left side and advanced to second on a balk. A single by shortstop Ranger Wiens moved Jackson to third. Jacobsen then recorded his second single of the day, scoring Jackson. Third baseman, Kainoa Obrey, who had a .556 batting average before Saturday's game, doubled down the left field line, scoring Wiens and Jacobsen.

Obrey's double chased ASU ace Eric Averill (3-0) from mound after just 2 1/3 innings. Until today, Averill had not given up an earned run in 18 innings of work.

BYU freshman southpaw Ken Gravely, who pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief last week at Arizona, kept the Sun Devil hitters at bay, holding them to just two hits over the first four innings.

ASU got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when catcher Joel Bocchi followed a single and a walk with a three-run homer to left, narrowing the margin to 4-3.

One inning later, the Sun Devils tied the game on a leadoff homerun by clean-up hitter Jeff Larish, his team-high seventh of the season. ASU took the lead for good after scoring two runs in the eighth. The Cougars did not score after the third inning.

BYU will return to Arizona on Thursday, where they will take part in the 2003 Rawlings/Oakland Athletics Spring Training Tournament in Scottsdale. Next week's opponents include Northwestern, British Columbia, Cal Poly, and Missouri.
