Sun Devils Win Game Two in Comeback
TEMPE -- For just over three innings Friday night BYU had No. 8 Arizona State and its national pitcher of the week wondering as the Cougars took a 4-0 lead.
Then ASU, now 13-1, exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third and five more runs in the sixth to break the game open and defeat BYU, 17-6. It was the second straight loss for the Cougars, now 1-4, who had been dismantled by the Sun Devils.
For the second night in a row, BYU second baseman Rob Itri homered. Itri's dinger to right field started the second inning to give BYU a 1-0 lead. Jake Stubblefield drew a base on balls after Itri's homer and he advanced home thanks to Tim Law's one-out double after Ranger Wiens got aboard due to a fielding error by ASU's second baseman. With BYU up 2-0, Law ended the inning when he was put out trying to steal home.
The Cougars increased their lead to 3-0 in the third when Doug Jackson got on through another fielding error by the Sun Devil second baseman. Jackson stole second and scored off Stubblefield's two-out single up the middle. In the interim, Itri had drawn a base on balls and ended up scoring BYU's fourth run when Ryan Chambers singled through the right side.
In the fourth ASU loaded the bases and scored two runs due to a lead-off error and a pair of walks. Six unearned runs ended up scoring in that inning to give the Sun Devils a 7-4 advantage.
BYU closed the gap in the fourth when Brock Jacobsen hit a two-run homer with two out to right field. ASU got a solo homer in the fourth from Jeremy West to increase it's lead to 8-6.
Jared Liebeck, who had earned national pitcher of the week honors last week, left the mound after the fourth inning, having struck out four Cougars, giving up seven hits and six runs, three of them earned.
Two more ASU homers in the fifth by Jeff Larish, a solo which was his sixth dinger of the year, and Frank Mesa, a two-out blast, increased the Sun Devils' lead to 11-6.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Wiens and Itri were both ejected for arguing with umpires and were replaced by Clayton Carson and Wade Vest, respectively at shortstop and second base defensively for BYU.
The final game of the series is Saturday afternoon.
