Wildcats Thump Cougars

TUCSON -- Arizona took advantage of a 10-run fifth inning Saturday to beat BYU 32-3 in the final game of the three-game series.

The Cougars, 1-2, have dropped two straight since defeating Arizona, now 2-1, in the season opener on Thursday, 6-3.

The Arizona hitters struck early, scoring seven runs, six of them earned, off senior starter Jason Garcia, who recorded just one out before being pulled.

The remainder of the Cougar pitching staff did not have any more luck in taming the Wildcats, who scored in every inning except the fourth.

BYU was not much better in the field, where it had 10 errors.

A two-run homerun in the fourth inning by sophomore outfielder Ryan Chambers, who went three-for-four, was the only bright spot for the Cougar offense, which was all but silenced by Arizona starter, Richie Gardner.

The Cougars managed just seven hits on the afternoon, and Chambers was the only batter with more than one.

Before Saturday's game, the largest margin of victory by a Cougar opponent was 25 runs, when BYU lost to Northern Colorado 28-3 in 1981, and again in 1999 when Arizona State defeated the Cougars by the same spread. Prior to this game the highest run total recorded against the Cougars was 29 by Cal State Northridge in 1994 at the league championships in Provo.

The Cougars will return to the Grand Canyon State next weekend for a three-game series at Arizona State University. ASU is ranked eighth nationally by Baseball America.

All three games will be webcast on the Internet at through the link at www.byucougars.com.
