Wildcats Even Series

TUCSON -- Despite an early 7-1 lead, BYU lost 17-13 Friday afternoon at Arizona after giving up 16 runs in the final five innings.

BYU, 1-1, had an outstanding offensive performance in its second game against Arizona, 1-1. Junior outfielder Brock Jacobsen and senior third baseman Kainoa Obrey combined for almost half of the Cougar's hits. Jacobsen was two-for-four with three RBI, including a three-run homerun. Obrey was five-for-six with a homerun, five singles and three RBI.

The Cougars struck early against Arizona starter Sean Rierson. Jacobsen's homerun came in the first inning, after singles from Rob Itri and Obrey, giving the Cougars an early 3-0 lead.

BYU scored once in the second. Tim Law was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to third base on a double by Doug Jackson, who went two-for-five on the afternoon. Shortstop Ranger Wiens then hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Law from third.

The Cougar offense stayed hot, scoring three more runs in the third, pounding out four consecutive hits to start the inning, including a two-run double by Jake Stubblefield.

Junior transfer Michel Bergeron started the game on the mound for the Cougars, and held the Wildcat batters to just one run in the first three innings.

The Arizona bats came alive in the fourth, scoring three runs off Bergeron, bringing the score to 7-4.

Obrey led off the fifth with his first homerun of the season, increasing the Cougar lead to 8-4.

The Wilcat offense then caught fire, outscoring the Cougars 13 to 1 over the next four innings, knocking Bergeron out of the game in the fifth. The bullpen did not fare much better, giving up eight earned runs in the remaining 3 1/3 innings.

A ninth-inning Cougar rally, which included doubles by Jackson and Wiens, came up short, as BYU could not overcome the considerable Arizona lead.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the final game of this weekend's three-game series. Tomorrow's game will not be broadcast in any fashion.
