Three Baseball Recruits Sign With BYU

PROVO -- A trio of baseball players have inked letters of intent from the special November signing period to play for Brigham Young University.

Pitchers Jeff Mousser of Tempe, Ariz., and Jacob Chrisman of Provo join infielder Brad Hales of Spanish Fork as players who have signed on with new BYU Head Coach Vance Law.

"We are trying to replace the players we lose each year with players who will continually upgrade our program," said Law. "These three players can step in and make a contribution from the start."

Mousser, 6-2, 210, is a righthander from Marcos de Niza High where he had a 2.84 ERA, striking out 75 in 74 innings and walking eight last season. He also compiled a 9-1 record last summer when he struck out 80 batters and walked 15 in 61 innings.

"He throws the ball between 87-89 (mph) and has good command of his curve as well," said Law. "He has dominated outstanding hitters when I've seen him and he can throw his changeup for strikes."

Chrisman, 6-9, 200, is a righthander who also signed a basketball letter of intent with the Cougars. He had a 4-4 record with a 3.70 ERA, and had 60 strikeouts in 53 innings with 22 walks. He hit .343 and also played first base.

"Jake has a good chance of being drafted this coming year," said Law, who also coached him at Provo High. "He throws hard and has good control, especially for someone his size. He is a terrific competitor who is also a good hitter. His future is in baseball."

Hales, 5-10, 165, is a switch-hitter from Spanish Fork High where he was a second baseman.

"He is an excellent middle infielder," said Law. "He is out of the Spanish Fork mold of great competitors. He has good speed, is a good hitter, and understands how to play the game. He'll be an outstanding college baseball player and will shore up our infield."
