Florida Atlantic, Arizona State Claim Repeat Victories

TEMPE -- Nine consecutive scoreless innings contributed to BYU's downfall Saturday as it lost a split doubleheader in the Tempe Diablos Classic, losing again to Florida Atlantic, 6-4, and to Arizona State, 14-2.

The winless Cougars, 0-4, came close in game three of the tournament against Florida Atlantic, who defeated BYU 12-9 on Friday. In Saturday's tilt against FAU, the Cougars jumped out to leads of 1-0 in the first inning and 4-2 in the third before a four-run rally by the Owls in the fifth inning.

Lefty James Ray, who helped end FAU's 40-game win-streak last season when he pitched for Jacksonville University, went six innings, striking out three and surrendering all six runs .

The Owls got help from a solo homer by Jeff Blair and a pair of doubles from Ryan Withey, who was a perfect three-for-three again against BYU for a pair of RBI. Teammate Nick Mattioni earned a save on the mound.

BYU's Matt Carson was credited with three RBI off three singles in five at bats against the Owls.

In the nightcap against host ASU, the Cougars were tied 0-0 until the third inning when Mitch Jones of Orem hit a three-run homer to pace a seven run rally. It was Jones' fourth homer of the season.

Two Cougars each had a pair of hits against the Sun Devils, first baseman Craig Peterson and catcher Michael Davies. BYU shortstop Nick Day also had a double.

ASU pitcher Chad Pennington struck out seven Cougars, while teammate Drew Friedberg earned a save in throwing three shutout innings. BYU starter Sean Noorda took the loss.

ASU, ranked No. 22, improved to 6-0 as it readies to host FAU, 2-1, in a rematch on Sunday. BYU travels to play single games on Monday and Tuesday at Tucson against Arizona at 3 p.m. each day.
