First Victory for Coach Vance Law
TUCSON -- Behind only once Monday, BYU's baseball team gave Coach Vance Law his first collegiate victory, 15-9, over the University of Arizona.
The Cougars, now 1-4, took the initial lead, 1-0 in the second inning, fell behind 2-1 in the bottom of that inning, then scored three runs the next inning to claim their first victory of the year. Lefty Jeff Stone started the game and went five and a third innings, scattering nine hits and striking out five to earn the win.
Stone was relieved by Nate Fernley, Todd Crump and Rusty Gray, who each gave up one run.
Leading the big bats for the Cougars was Stanford transfer Nick Day, who had four RBI, including his first home run of the season. Day played shortstop in place of an injured Seth King.
Cougar leftfielder DJ Jackson had a pair of doubles and was joined by teammates Michael Davies, Kainoa Obrey, David Rock and Nate Mathis with doubles. BYU first baseman Ty Haguewood also had a triple.
Arizona also had a homer by Erik Torres.
The Wildcats, now 4-3, host BYU again on Tuesday afternoon.
