Time Change for Home Opener/Carson Honor

There is a change in the starting time to 3 p.m. on Friday's home baseball opener at BYU with the Air Force Academy in Provo.

Originally the game at Cougar Field had been scheduled for a noon start, but that has been delayed because of field preparation work involved in moving back the fences.

In other baseball news, BYU's Matt Carson and San Diego State's John Skinner are the McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Carson, a freshman outfielder from Yucaipa, Calif. (Yucaipa HS), batted .500 (6-for-12) with four RBI, four runs, two home runs and one double in the three-game, conference road sweep at UNLV (9-1, 5-3, 9-8). In the series opener, Carson went 3-for-5 with two RBI, two runs and hit his first home run of the season in the Cougars 9-1 victory. Carson closed the series with a 2-for-4 performance with two RBI, a home run and a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to tie the game at eight. BYU went on to win the game, 9-8.

The Cougars have won four in a row and are 12-10 overall and 3-0 in conference action.

This is the first Player of the Week honor in Carson's career and the second for BYU this season. Teammate Micah Mangrum was named the McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 8 following his complete game shutout over Mesa State.
