Peterson's Perfect Day Stops Utah For Second Straight

PROVO -- Craig Peterson had a perfect day from the plate Friday including the game-winning RBI as BYU defeated Utah, 4-3.

The Cougars, now 16-12 overall and 7-1 in the Mountain West Conference, got four singles from Peterson. His fifth-inning single again to left center scored Seth King. King, the leadoff batter in the fifth, beat out a throw from third and advanced to second on the throw, then moved to third on a wild pitch to the delight of most of the 644 fans basking in the sun.

King was two-for-two on the day, also scoring in the three-run third from a double. Tyler Perry led off the third with a single, advanced on King's double and scored on Shane Belliston's sac-fly to center. Two batters later King scored on Nick Day's sac-fly to center. Peterson scored the third run in the third on a Michael Davies' single.

The Utes started the game with the bases loaded until Micah Mangrum struck out three batters in a row to end the first inning. Mangrum registered eight strikeouts in six innings to record his fifth victory.

"Micah and Nate (Fernley) worked themselves out of jams and I was glad to see Todd (Crump) get that last guy out before the meat of their order came up," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "It was a well-pitched game on both sides."

Utah's Ryan Bailey, now 1-3, took the loss, but was spelled by Matt McAfee in the sixth. McAfee surrendered only one hit, Peterson's single in the seventh which was negated by Utah's second double play of the afternoon.

Utah took the initial lead in the third inning when Brit Pannier doubled down the right field line, beating out the throw to second. Pannier scored two plays later on Jed Chrisman's single.

Michael Goff doubled down the left field line to start the Utes' fourth inning and he scored of Adam Castleton's single. Castleton was picked off at second by Mangrum after advancing on a catcher's error.

Castleton belted a solo homer in the sixth before Nate Fernley relieved Mangrum for two innings. Todd Crump relieved Fernley in the ninth to record his second save.

The Utes, now 13-16 and 4-4, return to Provo for the final BYU home game in the series on Saturday at noon.
