Nine Stolen Bases Aids SDSU to 7-3 Victory

SAN DIEGO -- First place BYU lost its foothold on the league lead Thursday night with a 7-3 baseball loss at San Diego State.

The Cougars, now 18-13 overall and 8-2 in the Mountain West Conference, had several occasions to get back in the game with the Aztecs, but each time SDSU pitching came through. Freshman Chris Hartshorn claimed the victory, improving his record to 4-2 and got a save from John Skinner.

BYU's Michael Davies hit a second-inning homer to close the gap at 2-1. In the sixth inning BYU stranded two runners on base and left the bases loaded in the seventh.

In that seventh inning, a two-run rally fell short as BYU narrowed the lead to 5-3 thanks to Shane Belliston's one-run double. The Aztecs recorded nine stolen bases against BYU.

"The walks we gave up really hurt us," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "We can't fault our players as they were in there battling. Our pitching wasn't what it has been and we have to be more patient at the plate."

New Mexico, with a 7-1 record in Mountain West Conference, now takes the lead in the league race going into Friday's action at Utah. SDSU, now 19-16 and 7-3, hosts BYU Friday night and again on Saturday afternoon.
