Mangrum Strikes Out 13 in Loss to Aztecs

SAN DIEGO -- Despite 13 strikeouts Friday by pitcher Micah Mangrum and a 3-0 lead, BYU lost to San Diego State, 6-3.

BYU, now 18-14 overall and 8-3 in the Mountain West Conference, scored all of its runs in the fifth inning. Those runs came from a solo homer by Aaron Whitley to right centerfield, an RBI single by Nick Day to score Craig Peterson and Day scoring after two SDSU errors.

Mangrum, now 5-4, pitched 7.1 innings, scattering nine hits and giving up all six runs before Nate Fernley came in relief.

The Aztecs gathered six stolen bases and a three-for-three performance from catcher Brandon Rogers, including a double and stealing home for the final run. For the second game in a row John Skinner picked his second save.

SDSU, now 20-16 overall and also 8-3 in the MWC, hosts BYU in the final game of the series on Saturday afternoon.
