Carson, Stone Lead BYU to 20-2 Pounding Over UNM

ALBUQUERQUE -- A half a game separates BYU and league-leading New Mexico Thursday evening after the Cougars stunned the Lobos, 20-2.

An 11-run seventh inning blew the game open for the Cougars after they fell behind 1-0 in the first inning. BYU evened things in the second, as Matt Carson and Kainoa Obrey hit back-to-back doubles to knot the score at 1-1. The Cougars took the lead for good in the third when Michael Davies doubled in a run and Carson whacked another RBI double.

The Cougars sent 15 men to the plate in the seventh inning, led by Carson's two-run homer along with two-run singles by Tyler Perry, Shane Belliston and Nick Day.

The Cougars also got a two-run homer from Davies in the fifth. Carson ended up with a team-high four hits and four RBI and extended his hitting streak to 18 games. UNM's Scott Candelaria extended his hitting streak to 19 games.

Nate Mathis got an RBI triple for the Cougars in the eighth and teammate Aaron Whitley got a two-run triple in the ninth.

BYU sophomore lefty Jeff Stone picked up his seventh win in pitching as many innings and striking out as many batters.

The loss snapped UNM's nine-game winning streak. The game was played before 562 fans at the Albuquerque Sports Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Dodgers' AAA farm club Albuquerque Dukes.

BYU is now 22-15 overall and 10-3 in the Mountain West Conference, while UNM is 22-13 and 10-2. The two teams play the second of a three game series on Friday evening at 7 p.m. in a game which will be broadcast live over KSRR Radio (1400 AM) locally until the Utah Jazz broadcast begins.
