Costly Errors Lead to 10-7 Lobo Defeat of BYU

ALBUQUERQUE -- Seven unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Friday paved the way for New Mexico to claim a 10-7 victory over BYU's baseball team.

The league-leading Lobos chased Cougar starter Micah Mangrum from the game in that sixth inning. BYU had a chance to turn a double play with the bases loaded in that inning when reliever Nate Fernley threw to home, but catcher Michael Davies dropped the ball on the force play which allowed the final two UNM runs.

Lobo reliever Joe Abell struck out eight Cougars after coming in during the third inning.

The Cougars scored most of their runs in the fifth off a single by Matt Carson and two of three UNM errors that inning as BYU took a 5-3 lead. Carson extended his hitting streak to 19 games.

BYU got its initial two runs off sac-flies by Nick Day and Davies in the second inning.

The final two BYU runs came in the seventh when Shane Belliston hit a two-run double down the left field line.

Behind 40-mile-an-hour winds and 986 fans, the Lobos reclaimed their game-and-a-half advantage in the conference.

The Cougars, now 22-16 overall and 10-4 in the Mountain West Conference, play a final game at New Mexico, 23-13 and 10-3, on Saturday at 1 p.m. Radio KSRR (1400 AM) will broadcast the game live locally.
