Albers Throws a Complete Game in 8-4 UNM Win
ALBUQUERQUE -- Lefty Mike Albers recorded a complete game Saturday by throwing an 8-4 victory over BYU.
Albers improved his record to 6-1 by allowing only one big inning, the fifth for BYU.
In that fifth inning BYU took a 4-3 lead as Albers hit two BYU batters. Nick Day had a two-run single and later scored off Michael Davies' double. Davies scored off a double by Kainoa Obrey.
The Cougars struck out with the bases loaced in the first and were three- Up-three-down in the second, third, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Actually, BYU had a runner aboard in the third and sixth innings, but were picked off and caught stealing.
One of the big blows came in the seventh inning when Aaron Stanley's lead-off double to centerfield was lost in the sun.
"That ball we lost at centerfield opened the door for three runs," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "We pitched well, we just didn't back them up defensively."
Another big UNM hit was a two-run homer by Aaron Sisk in the third inning, his 16th of the season.
BYU's record is now 22-17 overall and 10-5 in the Mountain West Conference, while New Mexico is 23-13 and 12-2 for first place in the league.
The Cougars are next in action this Thursday when they host UNLV at 2 p.m. to start a three-game series.
