Mangrum Strikes Out 12 Utes for a 10-5 Victory

SALT LAKE CITY -- Micah Mangrum struck out 12 Utes Friday in a complete game to lead BYU to a 10-5 victory over Utah.

When Mangrum surrendered three hits in a row, culminated by Donald Hawes' three-run homer in the sixth, the senior buckled down and gave up only one hit to the next 14 batters. Mangrum struck out six more batters in that 14-batter interim to improve his record to 7-6.

"After that home run there was a change in his demeanor," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "He is a real bulldog and wasn't going to be denied with his hard-breaking slider. He started to throw the ball with real intensity and meaning after being up and down in the first couple of innings."

Actually, Mangrum struck out the first three Utes in the first inning before his temporary setback.

BYU's first six batters of the game recorded singles except for Michael Davies' three-run homer. After the Cougars took a 4-0 lead in the first, Utah scored its first run when Brit Pannier continued his terror with a single to score Nate Weese.

With two outs in the fourth, BYU's Shane Belliston put the Cougars up for good when he battled his two-strike count into a two-run single. The Cougars also got insurance runs off substitute Tyler Haguewood's two-run homer in the ninth.

The Cougars, now 25-22 overall and 13-10 in the Mountain West Conference, play again at Utah, 20-26 and 10-13, on Saturday at noon.
