Aztecs End BYU's Season

LAS VEGAS -- Chad Chop and Chad Redfern each knocked in two runs Friday night during the six-run fifth inning to set up San Diego State's 11-7 defeat to eliminate BYU from the Mountain West Conference Baseball Tournament.

The Cougars, who finish the season at 29-29, came from behind to tie the game at three-all before that fifth-inning explosion.

Michael Davies' three-run single glanced off the foot of pitcher Chris Hartshorn as Craig Peterson chugged from first for a head-first slide which completed clearing the loaded bases to tie the game in the top of the fifth. That Cougar scoring spree was set up by a pair of errors from shortstop Edgar Gonzalez.

But the game got away in the six-run fifth when the Aztecs chased Sean Noorda off the mound. A walk, a pair of hit batters and an error from the pitcher on a pick-off attempt contributed to the Cougar demise that inning.

Seth King's two-run homer to straight-away centerfield, 400 feet away, closed the gapt to 9-5 in the sixth. Double plays by each team made for a quick seventh inning.

The Aztecs got a two-run homer from Redfern in the eighth and BYU got a two-run single from Davies in the ninth.

"I have to be the only guy in the world who got three RBI off a single," said Davies of his fifth-inning performance. "Hitting is fickle sometimes. Coach Law worked with me when I was in a slump. When guys in front of me get on base I become a better hitter. It's always fun to hit behind Nick Day and in front of Matt Carson because they have to throw good pitches to me."

SDSU freshman pitcher Hartshorn threw 139 pitches and moved the ball around well on the Cougars to improve his record to 7-4. The Aztecs take on the Air Force Academy in the championship game on Saturday afternoon after the Falcons eliminated Utah, 10-5, on Friday.
