Fernley, Carson Pace Win at USF

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--Pitcher Nate Fernley and rightfielder Matt Carson led BYU to a 10-6 victory Monday afternoon over the University of San Francisco.

Fernley, who improved his record to 3-0, logged 15 strikeouts in seven innings before he was relieved by Matt Ward, who recorded a save in his first appearance as a Cougar. Fernley's 15 strikeouts is the third-best mark in Cougar history.

Carson got two home runs in the game in a four-of-five outing for six RBI. His first homer was a two-run shot in the seventh. His three-run homer in the ninth drove in Brad Hales, who led off with a double, and Shane Belliston, who got on base with a bunt-single. He also had an RBI triple in the sixth.

In the top of the fifth inning Kainoa Obrey led off with a home run.

BYU's record is now 4-2 as it readies for another 2 p.m. game at the University of San Francisco Tuesday. BYU freshman Scott Koffman is scheduled to pitch on Tuesday. The Dons are now 1-2.
