Early Lead Vanishes at Cal

BERKELEY -- Cal registered 14 strikeouts against BYU to claim a 5-3 come-from-behind victory in a rain-delayed game Friday afternoon.

Bear starter David Cash tallied nine of those strikeouts in his six innings, improving his record to 2-0. Reliever Matt Brown struck out five to earn the save.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Cameron Coughlan led off with a walk, advanced to third on Shane Belliston's single, and scored on a wild pitch.

Cal scored its first three runs in the third inning off five hits.

In the fifth inning Doug Jackson hit a one-out single and was driven in by Belliston's single. The Cougars' other run that inning came when Coughlan scored off Matt Carson's single.

Freshman starter Jeff Stearman struck out the side in the seventh inning before he was relieved by Jeff Mousser. Cougar batters struck out, three-up, three-down in the second inning and nearly in the fourth except for Michael Wirrick's one-out double.

BYU's record is now 5-4 going into Saturday afternoon's final game at Cal-Berkeley, now 4-1. In game three of the series, the Cougars are scheduled to start Nate Fernley, who has a 3-0 record.
