Obrey Breaks Up Perfect Game

FULLERTON -- Kirk Saarloos threw a one-hit shutout Saturday as Cal State Fullerton defeated BYU, 5-0.

Saarloos, a senior righthander, made short work of the Cougars, retiring 23 straight batters before losing his perfect game when Kainoa Obrey broke it up with an eighth inning single. Saarloos struck out 11 batters in the game which lasted only one hour and 39 minutes. Saarloos is the same pitcher who recorded a save against BYU last Thursday and improved his record to 2-2.

Obrey hit a two-out bloop single to right field in the eighth. Lefty Jeff Stone struck out five in six innings as BYU's starter coming off an elbow injury.

The Titans got a three-run homer from Kyle Boyer in the second inning and a solo homer from Aaron Rifkin in the sixth. The Titans, who were also the last team to shutout BYU, 10-0, in 1996, are now 6-6.

BYU's record is now 7-6 and next plays Washington, Illinois, and Kentucky in Tucson, Ariz., beginning Thursday in the Illini Desert Classic.
