Lobos Win Game Two

ALBUQUERQUE -- After leading 5-1 midway Friday evening, BYU's baseball team dropped a 13-6 decision to the University of New Mexico.

Cougar Matt Carson started a torrid pace with an RBI triple to right center in the first inning. Ty Haguewood hit a two-run double off the wall in centerfield in the fourth, followed by an RBI single from Tyler Perry. Haguewood hit in BYU's other run in the eighth.

The Lobos chased Jeff Stone from the mound in the fifth after he held them to three hits through three innings. Stone gave up three walks in the four-run fourth. UNM loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth after Jeff Stearman walked his first batter in relief with the score tied 5-5.

With two outs and the bases full in the fifth, Dusty Young, the Lobos' No. 9 hitter, laced a sinking liner that got by BYU center fielder Shane Belliston for a three-run triple to pull UNM within a run at 5-4. Troy Cairns drove home Young with a single to left.

BYU's record is now 9-9 overall and 1-1 in the Mountain West Conference, while UNM is 7-12 and also 1-1 going into Saturday afternoon's finale. The game will be broadcast live over KSRR Radio(1400 AM) locally at 3 p.m.
