Adams, Obrey Help Take UNM Series

ALBUQUERQUE -- Ryan Adams and Kainoa Obrey got BYU off to a 6-0 lead Saturday and the Cougars held on to win, 8-3, taking two of the three games against New Mexico.

Obrey belted a two-run homer to left field in the teeth of the wind in the second inning to start the scoring. Teammate Michael Davies added an RBI double also in the second. Obrey had an RBI double in the third. Ty Haguewood joined Obrey in getting three hits.

"I'm sitting back, waiting and finding the pitch I want," said Obrey. "I thought my hit was just a line drive to the gap until the umpire signaled it was a home run."

Adams improved to 4-1, going five innings and getting perfect relief help from Jeff Mousser, James Ray and Matt Ward in each of their innings.

"The middle of our lineup did a nice job," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "I'm encouraged by the way we are starting to swing the bat again. I dropped Kainoa in the order and he drove the ball well. He is a big part of our offense."

Lobo starter Chris Cooper held BYU at bay the next three innings after being touched up for six runs. Cooper, now 2-2, recorded eight strikeouts and set the Cougars down in order in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings before he gave up two more runs in the eighth.

BYU is now 10-9 overall and 2-1 in the Mountain West Conference, while UNM is 7-13 and 1-2. The Cougars next play a three-game series at San Diego State beginning Thursday.
