Stearman Gets and Win and a Save vs. SDSU

SAN DIEGO -- A pair of victories Saturday gave BYU the series advantage over pre-season favorite San Diego State, 5-4 and 8-5.

The Cougars, now 12-10 overall and 4-2 in the Mountain West Conference, got key pitching from freshman Jeff Stearman who picked up a victory in Saturday's continued game even though he only pitched in that game Friday, and got a save in Saturday's nightcap.

After being suspended following seven complete innings because of rain Friday evening, the Cougars endured a four-hour rain delay on Saturday before sealing their first victory vs. SDSU. Freshman Scott Koffman helped retire six of seven Aztecs to secure his first save of the season.

Matt Carson hit a two-run homer in the first inning of the suspended game, followed immediately by Ty Haguewood's double.

In Saturday's nightcap, BYU got homers from Carson in the fifth and Jeff Hiestand. Hiestand's two-run shot in the second inning tied the game at 2-2. Tyler Perry also had an RBI triple in the fourth. The Cougars battled back from committing three errors and striking out 12 times in game three of the series.

With the count 2-0, Stearman entered the finale with two men on base and no outs in the ninth to pick up his first save. He improved his record to 1-2 with the victory earlier in the day. Ryan Adams got the victory in game three to improve his record to 5-1.

BYU opens its home season this Thursday and Friday in games at 1 p.m. against Mesa State at UVSC's field because Miller Park is still under construction.
