Stone Leads BYU to Victory

LAS VEGAS -- Add another BYU pitcher's name to the winning column as the Cougars defeated UNLV, 9-5 on Saturday afternoon.

Jeff Stone cracked the juggernaut of Nate Fernley and Ryan Adams who have won the bulk of BYU's games. The junior lefty scattered eight hits and got eight strikeouts in his six innings against UNLV to record his first victory of the season. Stone's win was the 22nd in his Cougar career.

Stone was moved to the day three starting spot as BYU Coach Vance Law juggled his lineup in other ways, too. Law's son Tim and freshman Brad Hales were put in the starting lineup on Saturday at first base and shortstop and responded well.

Tim Law hit the game-winning RBI in the third inning when he singled to left field as the first batter off 6-5 lefty reliever Ron Scheinbaum. That single drove in Tyler Perry from first base for BYU's sixth run. Law's second-inning double also scored Perry as he led all Cougars with three RBI. Law scored in the second inning off Hales' left field single.

The Cougar defense played well behind Stone and company as 11 Rebels were stranded on base. Stone was relieved in the seventh by freshman Scott Koffman who threw two innings of no-hit ball before being replaced by James Ray.

BYU's Kainoa Obrey extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an RBI single in the five-run third inning and Jeff Hiestand improved his hitting streak to 10 games with a second-inning double. UNLV's David Trujillo extended his hitting streak to nine games, but struck out three times against Stone after good plate appearances in the previous two games against BYU. UNLV used seven pitchers in the nine-inning contest.

The Cougars improve to 16-14 overall and 7-5 in the Mountain West Conference while UNLV falls to 14-19 and 5-7. BYU starts a two-game series on Monday at Southern Utah University who has a 5-21 record. Those games will not be broadcast on the radio or on the Internet.
