Come-from-Behind Win Equals Series Sweep
PROVO -- BYU swept New Mexico Saturday, winning 11-5 and 3-2, extending its winning streak to nine before a crowd of 1,119 at Larry H. Miller Field.
The Cougars, now 24-14 and 13-5 in the Mountain West Conference, remained tied for first place in the league.
Jeff Stone got his 25th career victory in the nightcap when Doug Jackson scored from second on Tim Law's bunt in the bottom of the ninth. The inning started when Jackson came in to run for Jeff Hiestand who reached on an error. Lars Birkeland then walked to put runners on first and second with Law coming to the plate. Law bunted but the throw to first was high, allowing Jackson to score from second.
New Mexico loaded the bases in the fourth inning, scoring one run on a sacrifice fly by Chris Alexander and another on a RBI-single from Scott Tajima to put the Lobos up 2-0.
BYU scored its first run in the bottom of the fifth when Cameron Coughlan singled past a diving Chris Alexander, driving in Aaron Whitley who had reached on a triple. In the eighth, Coughlan tripled and scored on a Shane Belliston sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2 and set up the dramatic ninth-inning win.
"We are now getting to the point where we believe we can win even when we are behind," BYU coach Vance Law said. "We are comfortable with the fact we can come back and win games."
Kainoa Obrey hit a change up for a grand slam home run off his Hawai'i prep teammate Marvin Wong to lift BYU to an 11-5 victory in game one. It was a big day for Obrey who started the Cougar scoring.
Michael Wirrick, who is now two off the school record of 14 by Matt Carson, got on with his 12th hit by pitch of the season. Wirrick scored off Obrey's midfield single. Obrey scored off Seth King's single, but King was out on the play as he tried to extend it to a double.
The Lobos took the early lead off three consecutive hits in the third inning to chase Jeff Stearman from the mound as they took a 5-2 advantage.
King lost his fingernail on his throwing hand in the top of the fifth, which brought in reserve Brad Hales to shortstop.
Carson tied the game at five-all with his 13th homer to left field in the bottom of the fifth which caused David Young to vacate the pitching spot. Lobo skipper Rich Alday rotated three more pitchers in the game. Hales' sac fly drove in Obrey. Then Ty Haguewood hit a solo homer to give BYU a 7-5 lead.
The Lobos intentionally walked Carson in the sixth to load the bases and set up Obrey's slam.
The Cougars next host Southern Utah, 9-29, in a pair of 4 p.m. games on Monday and Tuesday.
