Close Loss at Oklahoma State

STILLWATER -- A one-run, two-out lead vanished for BYU in the ninth inning Tuesday as Oklahoma State pulled out an 8-7 victory.

An infield error and a misjudged outfield fly opened the door for OSU's Cowboys to win the final home game of their regular season on a pair of unearned runs. The Cougars, now 29-18, gave a scare to OSU, who now improves to 35-15.

BYU's Matt Carson greeted the first pitch of reliever Kris Oakes with a three-run homer in the third inning. It was the 17th homer of the season for Carson, who leads the Mountain West Conference in that category.

After not allowing a baserunner the first two innings, Nate Fernley surrendered a lead-off walk and then Zack Cates hit his two-run homer. A left field single tied the game in the fourth inning, then Rob Watson hit a three-run homer to give the Cowboys a 6-3 lead.

Carson hit a two-run single in the sixth to tie the game at six-all thanks to four consecutive singles by Ty Haguewood, Lars Birkeland, Tyler Perry, and Doug Jackson.

Shane Belliston extended his hitting streak to 20 games off of reliever Joe Weaver, who had a 6-0 record with a 0.64 ERA. Belliston's eighth-inning single up the middle drove in Birkeland to make the score 7-6. Then Weaver and OSU elected to intentionally walk Carson to get out of the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, Fernley, who didn't get a decision in the game, was replaced by James Ray. Ray retired the next two batters with two Cowboys left on base. He then got two more outs in the ninth before being replaced by Justin Su'a with two men on base.

BYU was scheduled to play a second game on Wednesday at Oklahoma State, but that contest has been replaced with a 4 p.m. CDT game at Oral Roberts. The BYU-ORU game can be heard live on the Internet at either www.kcfo.com or by clicking on the message board at www.goldeneagleathletics.com.
