Late Leads Vanish at Texas Tech
LUBBOCK -- Leads in the seventh inning vanished as BYU dropped a doubleheader Friday in its season opener to Texas Tech, 8-6 and 6-5.
The Cougars, 0-2, had seventh-inning leads of 6-4 in the opener and 4-3 in the nightcap. The 26th-ranked Red Raiders, 2-0, won game two in the ninth-inning when pinch-hitter Travis McElroy scored. McElroy led off with a single to start the inning and scored off Jon Slack's one-out single to left field with two on.
"I'm encouraged, but disappointed," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "We learned we can compete with anybody. We didn't close out the games and expand our leads when needed."
BYU got a solo homer in game two from sophomore Dave Jensen, who was a Freshman All-American before serving a Church mission. Jensen extended his current hitting streak to nine games, having hit an RBI double in the opener.
Tech jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opener which was supposed to be played Thursday, but was postponed because of snow.
The Cougars tied the score at three-all in the fifth inning when Doug Jackson walked, advanced on Cameron Coughlan's single and on a double play ground out initiated by Matt Carson, a pre-season All-American. Jackson scored off Jensen's single to center field.
Kainoa Obrey extended his team-leading hitting streak to 13 games when he hit a double. Obrey's two-run double keyed a three-run seventh inning when four Tech pitchers tried to stop the Cougars. Obrey, a pre-season All-American, left the game after that inning with a back injury and did not play in game two.
All-American Nick Blankenship hit a solo home run in the eighth inning of game one to the delight of the mostly 2,663 Red Raider fans.
BYU got off to a 4-0 lead in the nightcap behind the pitching of Ryan Adams who gave up six hits in as many innings. Coughlan and Carson pulled off a double steal in the first inning, with Coughlan scoring off Jensen's ground-out to second.
Han Yi, Jackson and Jensen scored in the third inning. Yi led off with a walk, then Jackson doubled to left field. Yi scored off Coughlan's single and Jackson scored off Carson's sac-fly.
Austin Cranford's two-run homer in the seventh inning tied the game at five-all.
Jackson and Coughlan each recorded five hits in the doubleheader to lead the Cougars, while Carson had four.
The two teams meet in a final game on Saturday at noon.
