Red Raiders Sweep Series

LUBBOCK -- A grand slam by All-American Nick Blankenship Saturday afternoon lifted Texas Tech to a 10-2 victory and led to a three-game sweep over BYU.

The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when David Jensen's double drove in Doug Jackson and Matt Carson. Jensen hit another double in the sixth inning as BYU stranded seven runners on base for the game.

Jensen extended his hitting streak to 10 consecutive games, while Kainoa's 13-game hitting streak came to an end. Obrey, who left yesterday's opener with a back injury, was in the lineup as a designated hitter instead of playing third base on Saturday.

Blankenship, who hit a solo homer off the Cougars on Friday, belted his second dinger of the season in the third inning to give Tech a 5-2 lead. The 26th-ranked Red Raiders turned three double plays and had success against three of BYU's four pitchers used in the game witnessed by 2,353 fans.

BYU and TTU were the first collegiate teams to play in the continental United States. Tech catcher Willie Durazo, who went two of three Saturday, played against BYU last season in the NCAA tournament when he played for Northern Iowa.

The Cougars, 0-3, next play on Thursday evening to start a three-game series at Cal-Irvine. TTU, 3-0, travels to start a three-game series at New Mexico on Friday.
