Cal Poly Wins 14-5

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Twice BYU had the tying run at bat in mid-innings Tuesday before Cal Poly San Luis Obispo put the game away with a14-5 victory.

Both teams were looking to end three-game skids in the game at new Baggett Stadium, but the Mustangs, now 6-4-1, ended theirs, while BYU fell to 1-7 after the first-ever meeting with Cal Poly.

BYU shortstop Ranger Wiens tied the game at one-all when he laced a two out, second-inning single to drive in Rob Itri, who had doubled.

Errors started compounding on BYU as the Mustangs scored three runs in the second off three hits and one error, then two runs in the third off no hits. Mixed in with a couple of double plays and other outstanding Cal Poly defensive gems, the Cougars couldn't overtake the Mustangs despite 12 hits.

Jake Stubblefield, starting at third base for the Cougars in place of All American Kainoa Obrey, hit a line-drive, two-out home run over the 387 mark in left centerfield in the fourth. Stubblefield's dinger was the third homer of the season for BYU. Itri followed with a single to center, advanced to third on Wiens single to left and scored on Mike Weingarten's single to left to make the score 6-3.

Cougar first baseman Dave Jensen led off with a sixth-inning double, advanced on a fielder's choice and scored off a wild pitch from new reliever Nick Doan. BYU got its fifth run when Matt Carson led off with an eighth-inning double and scored off Stubblefield's single, making the score 12-5. Carson's double extended his team-leading hitting streak to eight games, while Cal Poly's shortstop Scott Anderson had his hitting streak ended at eight games, going oh-for-four.

Cougar fans who tuned into the game via the Internet were listening to Mustang play-by-play announcer Randy Scovil, son of the late BYU offensive football coordinator Doug Scovil.

The Cougars now bus home to ready for a return trip next week to California before the school's Olympic break. BYU next plays at Santa Clara this coming Monday before playing No. 1 Stanford on Tuesday.
