Second Victory of Season

SANTA CLARA -- Huge third and sixth innings Monday gave BYU an insurmountable lead in a 15-5 victory over Santa Clara.

It was BYU's second win of the season, improving its record to 2-7, while Santa Clara falls to 3-4. Every Cougar got a hit and there were a couple defensive lineup changes with Rob Itri starting at second and Ryan Chambers starting in left field.

BYU manufactured its first run when Doug Jackson was hit by a pitch, advanced to third when Matt Carson was safe on an error and scored off Kainoa Obrey's sacrifice fly.

Santa Clara tied the game in the bottom of the first inning when A.J. LaBarbera knocked a solo home run to left field. Back-to-back doubles by Joey Gomes and Kellan McConnell helped give the Broncos a 4-1 lead by the end of the first. The Cougars threw out a runner at home to end the inning on a relay from Chambers to Ranger Wiens to Lars Birkeland at the plate.

A homer to right field came to BYU's aid in the second inning when Jackson scored again. The junior Hawaiian belted the Cougars' fourth dinger of the season to drive in Lars Birkeland, who had singled, making the score 4-3.

Carson extended his hitting streak to nine consecutive games with a third-inning single. Carson was forced out, but later in the inning Kainoa Obrey scored off Itri's single and subsequent error in left field. The Broncos replaced their starting pitcher after Itri's single and the Cougars loaded the bases with two outs.

Chambers broke the tie and cleared the bases with a triple to right center to make the score 7-4. Jackson hit a bunt single to third to score Chambers, making the score 8-4 after the top of the third.

With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the fourth, the Broncos scored an unearned run, making the score 8-5.

BYU tacked on another run in the fifth on a solo homer by Jake Stubblefield, his second of the year, to left center.

Jackson scored for the third time when Carson reached on a fielder's choice in the sixth. Carson scored off Obrey's double to right field. Itri's double to center field drove in Dave Jensen and Obrey to make the score 13-5 favoring the Cougars and chased the third Bronco pitcher from the game.

Cougar pitcher Scott Koffman retired Santa Clara in order in the sixth inning and BYU went out one-two-three in the top of the seventh.

Jason Garcia relieved Koffman as the Cougars again retired the Broncos in order in the seventh and eighth innings. In that span, Garcia fanned three batters in a row.

In the eighth, BYU loaded the bases with no outs as Carson scored off Han Yi's single. Carson got on base being hit by the pitcher for the fourth time this season, putting him five away from the school career record. The Cougars grounded into a double play to put a damper on the inning, but loaded the bases again. Obrey scored off Chamber's walk to secure a 15-5 lead.

When BYU grounded into its third double play of the evening, the ninth inning was over for the Cougars. Garcia quieted the Broncos with his fourth strikeout of the game to earn BYU's first save of the season, while Koffman got his first victory of the year.

The Cougars next play late Tuesday evening against top-ranked Stanford, 4-2. Stanford is led by former Cougar pitcher Jeremy Guthrie (1998) who was an All-American and pro draft for the Cardinal last season following a Church mission.
