No. 1 Stanford Wins, 8-1

PALO ALTO -- Stanford got two home runs Tuesday to power past BYU, 8-1.

No. 1 Stanford improved its record to 5-2, while BYU falls to 2-8.

Sam Fuld hit a line drive, two-run homer to right field to give the Cardinal their initial lead. The Cougars battled the top-ranked Cardinal for the next three innings. Then Donny Lucy belted a three-run homer in the fifth to chase Jeff Stone from the mound with a 7-0 lead as Jeff Mousser entered the game.

BYU scored its run in the seventh when Jack Stubblefield hit a two-out doubled to left-center. Mike Weingarten battled the count to get a base on balls and then Lars Birkeland singled in Stubblefield, making the score 7 1.

A 4-6-3 double play got BYU out of a jam in the second inning. Another double play in the fourth was turned by Stubblefield when he caught a line-drive and tagged first to end the inning. Stone retired Stanford in order in the third inning and Mousser had a three-up, three-down inning in the sixth.

Matt Carson extended his team-leading hitting streak to nine games with a single up the middle in the fourth inning.

BYU's Rob Itri, who started at third base, advanced to second base as the lead-off batter in the fifth, but was stranded. Itri got aboard on an error, then stole second as Weingarten struck out.

BYU's next game is on Thursday when it starts a three-game series at the University of Pacific, 2-1, in Stockton, Calif. None of the BYU-Pacific games will be available on audiostream or livestats.
