Defending Champs Sweep UNLV

Las Vegas (March 12, 2002)--Home runs by Cameron Couglan and Matt Carson gave BYU a doubleheader victory Tuesday, 8-3 and 13-7.

The defending conference champions took a three-game sweep over UNLV to go atop the Mountain West in the first week of league play.

A nine-run fourth inning broke the game open for BYU in the nightcap. Scoring twice in the fourth was Matt Carson, who broke an 0-10 streak in the series with a single and a three-run homer. Rob Itri and Lars Birkeland drove in runs with doubles in the fourth and Doug Jackson drove in two runs with a sharp single to left.

First-year Coach Jim Schlossnagle, whose Rebels are now 10-13, was tossed from the nightcap after questioning the umpire about Birkeland's double down the line which he thought was foul.

Nevada native Kevin Bills knocked a solo homer for the Cougars in the fifth to put them up 11-1. Reserve Ryan Chambers knocked a two-run homer in the eighth to put BYU up 13-5.

Ryan Adams struck out five in five innings to earn his first victory of the season.

In the first game on Tuesday, Coughlan's third-inning grand slam gave BYU a 4-0 lead with no outs. Before UNLV could get through its lineup, the Cougars had nearly been through theirs and had batted around in the third inning.

"I knew it was out when I hit it," said Coughlan, who switched batting from the left side the next inning when the Rebels brought in a southpaw after his granny. "Most of my power comes from hitting right-handed."

Coughlan then drove in Ranger Wiens in the fourth. Dave Jensen accounted for the Cougars' final two runs, scoring in the fifth and driving in Jake Stubblefield in the seventh. Stubblefield had led off the seventh with a triple to right center.

Jeff Mousser, now 3-1, worked out of a bases loaded jams in the fourth and fifth innings.

The Cougars, 8-11, next play a three-game series at the University of Washington, 8-7, with the first game starting Thursday evening. None of the Washington-BYU games will be broadcast on the radio or on the Internet.
