Third Husky Game Ends in a Tie

SEATTLE -- Because BYU's baseball team had a flight to catch, it settled for a 12-12 tie Saturday with the University of Washington after eight innings.

The tie was the first for BYU since 1990 in Provo when it played to a 10 10 game with the University of Hawaii. The tie with the Huskies makes BYU's record 9-12-1 as it prepares for its home opener against San Diego State this Thursday at Larry H. Miller Field.

Originally the Cougars were supposed to play at Southern Utah on Monday and Tuesday, but weather forced a postponement of those games until May.

Weather was not much of a factor in Saturday's tie at Washington, although the teams started a few minutes late because of rain.

The Cougars jumped off to a 6-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a pair of stolen bases by Ryan Chambers and Lars Birkeland, who both singled. Among the big hits that inning was a two-run double by Rob Itri and an RBI single by Dave Jensen.

Washington responded by scoring six runs in the bottom of the second, started by a lead-off triple from Jay Garthwaite. He also belted a three run homer in the sixth.

BYU got solo homers from Matt Carson and Doug Jackson in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively. Carson's dinger, his fifth of the season, led off the fourth and Jackson's shot put BYU up, 9-7.

Washington retook the lead with Garthwaite's homer, 10-9. The Cougars regained the lead in the eighth, 12-11. In that inning, Han Yi led off with a pinch-hit double and was doubled in the next play by Jackson.

Jackson and Cameron Coughlan scored BYU's final runs. Coughlan beat out a bunt to advance Jackson to third, then stole second, the sixth time the Cougars swiped a base for the afternoon. Both of them scored when Carson singled to short and advanced on an error by the UW shortstop.

The Huskies, now 9-8-1, tied the game in the bottom of the eighth off a pinch-hit single. The game lasted three hours and 16 minutes, but was ended due to a pre-arranged time limit because of BYU's travel plans.
