Aztecs Claim Second Straight

Provo, Utah (March 22, 2001)--A two-home-run game by Dave Jensen wasn't enough Friday night as BYU fell to San Diego State 9-7 for the second straight game.

In front of 1,748 fans at Larry H. Miller Field, Jensen launched his first homer over the 400-foot mark in center field in the first inning giving the Cougars the early lead.

"I did swing the bat well, but I can't enjoy it as if we would have won," said Jensen. "We just need to come together as a team, catch the ball and make the plays just as we have been taught."

SDSU started slow, but the Aztecs took the lead in the sixth on a double to center by Garrett Cook that scored Brian Manfred.

"They scored a couple runs in the sixth inning because we didn't execute the double play," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "We are playing a little bit tense and scared. We need to relax."

The Aztecs put the game away in the seventh when Carlo Cota recored his second and third RBI bringing Cook and Anthony Gwynn home to make the score 9-5.

BYU added two runs in the fifth on Jensen's sixth homer of the year, again over the center field wall, and on a wild pitch that scored Rob Itri.

A late Cougar rally in the ninth fell short after Jensen's third extra-base hit, a double to right center, amounted to little as Aztec pitcher, Royce Ring, retired three of the next four batters to end the game. Ring, a member of the USA National Team, secured his ninth save and surrendered only his second earned run in 14 appearances.

The Cougars fall to 9-14-1 overall and 3-2 in the Mountain West Conference, a game behind the league-leading Aztecs who are now 20-9 and 4-1 in the conference.

"They've got a good team. They came to battle and they did a good job," Jensen said.

The teams conclude the three-game series in Provo on Saturday at 1 p.m.
